Right For Our Schools

I am a 35-year Nationally Certified teacher in Broward County, having worked at both Blanche Ely High School and South Broward High School. Born and raised in Hollywood, I have been an active and involved member of the Broward County community for over fifty years, as a student, teacher, and parent.

My career in education began in 1989 as a science teacher and swim coach at Blanche Ely High School, and in 1994 I transferred to South Broward High School, where I continued to teach and served as the swim coach for 15 years and the water polo coach. During my time at South Broward, I  sponsored numerous clubs such as Girls Get IT, Shark Club, ROV, and Interact, for which I  organized the Harvest Drive for the over nine years.

Currently, I serve as one of the Countywide School Board Members and have worked with district staff across the county to make a positive difference for our students.  I have worked collaboratively with my colleagues to increase teacher pay and increase resources to schools across the district. I set a goal to visit every school in the district and was able to complete this goal within my first two years in office.  I learned so much from those visits and was able to address concerns and immediate needs of schools following my visits.  I believe it is important to form relationships with our students and staff to better understand what is needed to help them to achieve the educational goals of the district.

I not only have experience with the Broward County Public school System as a teacher, but also a parent, with my two children having attended Stirling Elementary School, Olsen Middle School, and South Broward High School. My  younger son, Corey, received special education services throughout his K-12 education, and my older son, Tom, was an active member of the JROTC program and an athlete. Tom is now a veteran,  having served our country in the Marine Corps.  Through these experiences, I personally understand the importance of being actively engaged in the decisions-making that drives individualized educational planning, as well as involvement in extracurricular activities.

I currently hold various leadership roles in community groups committed to supporting students and making our schools and community safe. This includes serving as the President of the Chris Hixon Athletic Scholarship, dedicated to the memory of my husband, who was the coach at Stoneman Douglas High School who tragically lost his life on February 14, 2018 while trying to disarm the shooter.

Passionate about Broward County’s schools, its students, its teachers and its staff who go above and beyond in their dedication, the primary goals of my campaign are to make the changes necessary to keep our schools safe, not only from active shooters, but from bullying and over testing, expand mental health support for both students and teachers, provide teachers with adequate pay and the resources and policies they need to help students succeed, and build open and positive relationships between schools and their communities.  I have successfully brought stakeholders, community leaders, and educators together to develop policy, I have been  open and accessible, as well as understanding and compassionate, and I will continue to treat everyone equally and with respect.
